Graduate school is sliced into three classifications: doctoral programs, master’s programs, and professional schools that focus on areas in education, law, and medicine. This article selectively addresses graduate school concerns that pertain to doctoral programs.

Why Attend Graduate School?

Doctoral graduate school programs are for students with a passion for research, scholarship, and teaching. This passion is not based so much upon immediate lines of employment as it is upon a desire to make a difference in life. A doctoral student may graduate into the world of college professors. He or she may find employment in government or industrial research facilities. Some even start their own technical companies. Yet personal joy in performing the service is most often the driving force behind every graduate school candidate with a passion for doctoral programs.

Is Graduate School Difficult?

Graduate school doctoral programs involve training in research. The typical learning curve requires a five to eight year program. The course of study and research focuses upon a single interdisciplinary program as designed via a specific university. A PhD or some other form of doctoral degree reflects the cumulative results.

The first few years usually include an abundance of structured reading in subject background and history. In these early years, the workload is heavy. The exams are difficult. Battles with personal anxiety should be expected.

The middle years bring about a shift in focus. Attention is given to specific topics and personal advisors. Additional coursework is assigned. Students take on roles as teaching assistants.

The final years bring about the major payoff. Students take those first steps into the community of scholars that reside within their chosen field of research. They present papers to the public. They make professional acquaintances. Professional networking becomes a doorway into lifelong friendships. The work is in a field of research that stirs the student’s passions.

Graduate school is difficult but if the field is right for the student the process is also immensely satisfying.

As a student leaving for college you need to protect yourself against a number of things, one of them being identity theft. While it’s easy to notice and pinpoint someone if your computer was “stolen” at home it is quite another story when this happens on campus. Additionally securing your computer prevents identity theft.

Following are 10 ways that you can protect yourself while on campus.

Keep your door locked. Make it difficult for thieves to access your computer by adding the extra layer of security given by a locked door. It might seem simple but this single act can increase the security of your computer by 65%.

Secure your desktop. It’s gullible to think that thieves won’t move a desktop. Purchase some extra cables to secure the CPU to a sturdy object in the room.

Mark your property with visible and permanent identification marks. Thieves would think twice about going after property that is clearly and visibly marked.

The computer enables password protection, use it. Go into your settings and add a password that must be entered anytime anyone tries to use the computer. Make sure that you make the password difficult for someone to figure out and change it regularly to increase the protection.

Be discriminating with the information that you give out on the internet. A lot of social networking sites and even college campus sites will ask you to provide information such as your date of birth and other personal information. Be careful with the information that you give out and never respond to emails soliciting information such as your Social Security number, bank account numbers or credit card numbers.

Keep your records in a place where you can easily access them if you need to. If you have to report a stolen computer to the police would you be able to provide all the details they need? You will need to provide things like the make, model, specifications and most importantly the computer serial number so that they could identify it as yours if they do find it. Having this information could also prove handy if you need to file a claim to replace the computer.

Get a tracking device installed on the computer. Having a tracking device that runs in the background makes it easy to locate the computer if it is lost or stolen.

Use multilayer approach for protecting the computer. Having a last line of defense can help to keep your information safe. An encryption service like TrueCrypt will also keep your personal information secure of the computer is stolen. This works by creating virtual encrypted disks which only you can read.

Do not automatically save your passwords and personal details on your computer. It is convenient to have your computer store your logins so you won’t have the hassle of trying to remember them when you visit sites online. Storing information such as your passwords and credit card information make it easy for thieves if your computer is stolen. Invest in a software that locates profiles and identities stored on the computer and have it removed or encrypted based on what you need.

Beef up your network security. Make sure that when you are browsing the internet and exchanging data that you are doing so behind a secure network. Before you go out and purchase software and equipment to secure your network you should speak with the IT department at your college to see what options are available. You can even ask them for suggestions for improving your security so that you do not purchase things that would not be compatible with their network.

The Perkins Loan

If you want to go to college but don’t have enough cash to do so, then it’s about time to get to know about the Federal Perkins loan- as this may be your ticket to a brighter future. With the rising cost of tuition fee, many families are not able to send their kids to universities and colleges due to monetary constraints. But with the help of the federal Perkins loan, it is easier to send your kids to college. This type of loan is especially designed for those who have an extreme need of financial assistance. Visit the ED.gov page on Perkins loan Eligibility.

Extreme needs equals federal Perkins loan
You may be wondering what extreme need is- as defined by federal Perkin loan. Basically, families that have an income equivalent to $25,000 or less per year are considered to have extreme needs. But that doesn’t mean that families with higher income cannot avail the Perkins loan. In fact, it is probably a good idea to explore this option for a loan. So it doesn’t matter which income group you fall in, you must check your options for Perkins loan.

There are some cases where a family may earn more than $25,000 a year but due to specific circumstances, the family’s income may not be enough according to their needs, and can therefore be adjusted. There is a loan review process for federal Perkins loan, which will determine if you are indeed eligible for the loan.

Another reason why you should explore it is that this type of loan is made by the college of your choice and not by a financial institution. Here, the college would review the student body, and would identify the students who need most help, and thus should be qualified for the Perkins loan.

Special Benefits of the federal Perkins Loan
A lot of struggling students appreciate the low interest rates of the federal Perkins loan. Because of the low interest, it would be easier for them to pay the loan in the future. To be exact, the interest rate for this type of loan is only 5%. Another benefit is that there is absolutely no need to pay for insurance or fees for loan origination. Other lending institutions charge certain fee for loan approval, which is not a necessity for federal Perkins loans.

Other loan types would require students to pay for the loan after six months. But for the federal Perkins loan, the student is given a decent nine month grace period. The repayment period for this loan is also longer as compared to others. You are entitled to a repayment period of 10 years. If you wish for the loan to be canceled entirely, or at least a portion of it, you can either become a law enforcement officer or a nurse.

Just a reminder for the borrowing student, the federal Perkins loan is your loan and not your parents’ PLUS Loan, nor a family loan. This would take away the burden from the already financially struggling family. With a ten year repayment period, the Perkins loan can be your ticket to a brighter future.

Did you know? Right now, on this site, You can start a college search.

Happy 2011

Scholarships and grants are often worth seeking, as they could mean a brighter future with lesser expense on the students or their parents.

One of the firsts rule in getting one is you have to reach out and ask for it! Why do I say this?Because you have to apply for it and then get approved by the sponsor, college or the scholarship giving body to receive it. That means that you have to work hard for it. Somehow it’s similar to getting into a college application process where you decide which one to apply for.

You basically get a list of all the possible scholarship grants with requirements, and then choose one that would match what you need. When you have chosen several scholarship programs, you have to make a good and compelling application that is backed up by your achievements, recommendations, and most of the time an essay is also required. Often when you pass the initial stage of application, you will be asked for an interview.

The Most Common Type of Scholarships and Grants
Although there are several types of scholarships and grants, there is one type of scholarship grant that is common to all colleges. That is the merit-based scholarship. This type of scholarship is awarded to students basing on their qualities and strength and abilities. It can either be an athletic scholarship for those who are good in sports.

Academic scholarship is for those who have high GPAs. Artistic scholarship is for creative students and so on. Some of the factors that affect merit-based scholarships are extracurricular activities and community service records. Most of the time, this type of scholarship is given by private organizations, or it can also be given directly by the school. If you have recognized academic achievement or if you have high ACT or SAT scores, you may be a good candidate for this type of scholarship.

There are other types of scholarships and grants like need-based scholarships, which are awarded to those who are financially challenged students. The student-specific scholarship on the other hand is given to certain students that fit certain factors. An example is the minority scholarship, where one can apply for aboriginal scholarships. Then you also have the career-specific scholarships, which are given to students who intend to pursue a certain career or field of study.

Whatever types of scholarship it maybe, one thing is always sure when it comes to scholarship. And that is education at a lower expense.
