Surviving college life means more than stumbling through four years with a GPA just good enough to graduate with. Whether you’re entering college right out of high school, or you’re returning to school after putting a few years in the work force the college years are a time to expand your knowledge and social connections, and experience quantum leaps of self growth.
Be Proactive
Many new college students struggle with the transition because they’re waiting for teachers and other college administrators to take care of them – to remind them when papers are due, when events are scheduled or when their financial aid papers should be filed. In college, students need to be proactive about their responsibilities and that includes going to class on time every day.
Be Organized
Start each semester by making a master calendar that includes academic projects, rehearsals, team practices and important social events you don’t want to miss. Take a moment to introduce yourself to each professor at the beginning of the semester, that way if you need extra time or help later you will already have established a relationship.
Be Healthy
Poor eating habits, stress and sleep deprivation can lead to illnesses that make surviving college even more difficult. Keep fresh fruit and other healthy snacks in your dorm room or backpack for a quick bite that will keep you energized while avoiding the dreaded “Freshman 15.” Vitamins and supplements, along with adequate sleep will help keep your immune system strong. And don’t forget to exercise.
Be Social
In high school it’s easy to make new friends because you often spend your entire day with the same small group of people, but that’s not the case in college. Introduce yourself to dorm mates and class mates, and take advantage of campus clubs and organizations to find people that share similar interests. Friendships made in college often last a lifetime and there’s nothing like a close friend to help you survive all the changes and challenges college brings.
Surviving college life is easier if you establish a schedule that includes time for study, rest, exercise and socializing. But don’t forget to stay in touch with friends and family back home. Regular phone calls and emails will help combat homesickness and keep you grounded while you explore the new world of student life.
